Book reviews: The Indus Civilization, by Sir Mortimer Wheeler
Sir Mortimer Wheeler is without doubt one of the big names of archaeology and along with his contributions to furthering our knowledge of Britain’s past is best known for the ground breaking work in India. The area he worked in on the Pakistani/Indian border has become known as the Indus Valley Culture for its geographical location and whilst people tend to focus on the more glamorous regions of Egypt and Sumer, it is quite possible that his area of interest may be a pivotal pin in our understanding of mans development. In this book Wheeler provides a good introduction to the ancient history and development of that area, and whilst in the years since it was written some of the theories have moved on, this does still act as a good place to start.
Before delving into the big stuff, wheeler manages to acclimatise the reader by laying down some background information regarding climate, the nature of village and settlement patterns and shows the rich and diverse living that was to be had in the region. With the table set before the reader it is time to serve up the main course and what a feast it is. The two city sites, Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro feature heavily and along with the other lesser sites, the actual dig sites take up about a quarter of the book. The text is supplemented by some helpful plans and cross sections to aid your understanding of what was found.
Along side the specifics of actual finds and individual cities the book then takes these discoveries and uses them to paint a picture of the culture as a whole. Trade, transport, military service, farming, burial and arts and craft are all examined to show a culture flourishing not only at the same time as early dynastic Egypt but in many was as accomplished. A wealth of line drawings helps illustrate everything from jewellery and pottery styles to weapons and the tail section of the book contains over thirty black and white photographs of the sites. To place the culture in its slot in history a table of dating based on carbon 14 results is included, incidentally running from 2605 BC to 1640 BC.
As I mentioned before as the book was first published over fifty years ago, it does suffer from new discoveries undermining some of its value. The big argument that has dogged this area of cultural development is the idea that a later Aryan race invaded from the north and brought about the demise of this culture. This was an idea prevalent in Wheelers time but like many of these invasion and dispersal theories has been shelved in favour of a more gentle assimilation model. This aside the book does provide a good starting point for those that wish to acquaint themselves with one of the lesser-known areas of ancient history. The specific details on the city sites are especially useful even if some of the conclusions have been re-drawn.
What is particularly relevant to the modern reader are the obvious links between this culture and those of Egypt and the Fertile Crescent, trade connections and the exchange of ideas are obvious showing that even though the Indus Valley Culture is currently far less understood than its neighbours it in no way stood in splendid isolation. At only 140 pages it is not a massive challenge to read and is written in a way that is informative without being overwhelming and detailed without being overly academic. It’s the sort of book that you expect from such an accomplished talent as Sir Mortimer Wheeler.
Do Backlink Advertising Networks Really Work?
When I first heard of backlink advertising networks, I have to admit I was more than a bit skeptical. Of course backlinks are probably the most important tool in the search engine optimization kit, but buying or acquiring backlinks in an unnatural way has always been something Google and other major search engines do not condone. I took a look at a few networks hoping to find some answers.
The first network I looked at was DigitalPoint’s Coop Advertising Network (http://www.digitalpoint.com). DigitalPoint’s network allows you to create either banner or text ads that will then be displayed on various websites in the network with an active backlink. Websites receive a “weight” which determines how often they appear on other sites, although it wasn’t exactly clear on how a site gains weight. Further reading explained that certain factors such as Alexa Rank and number of pages showing ads may contribute to weight. It was even possible to target your ads by category. I was very impressed with the setup. So, I installed the ad network on a few websites and, sure enough, the system started to churn out backlinks.
After testing out the network, I decided to read what others were saying in their forums. Sure enough, my worst fears were realized. As I suspected, churning out links can have a negative impact on search engine rankings. Various sites complained of being completely dropped from Google or Yahoo’s index. The problem, it seems, was that links were not permanent. DigitalPoint’s network rotates links as you reload a page so you have no permanent backlinks. I immediately removed the links from my sites, and moved on to analyze the next network.
The next backlink advertising network I found was AdCaliber (http://www.adcaliber.com). I quickly read over their FAQ and was pleased to find that they promised permanent backlinks that only get removed when I choose. Other than that, the system seemed similar to DigitalPoint although it was a bit more flexible in ad targeting. After creating an account, I received 100 credits which I could use to bid for backlinks. Apparently, AdCaliber works on a bidding system. You bid a monthly amount of credits to obtain links on certain sites. For example, I bid 50 credits to obtain links on sites with a Google Pagerank of at least 5 and Alexa Rank of at least 500,000. Then, when an open ad slot appeared on a site matching those qualifications, the highest bidder would get the link. In my case, I would be debited 50 credits per month. I was very impressed with the system. I liked having the ability to target my ads precisely. I was also impressed with the ease of installation. With AdCaliber, you don’t have to upload any files to your server. You just simply paste a short PHP code on your website. It was very simple. The only negative thing I have to say about AdCaliber is that it is much newer than DigitalPoint and its network is not as large, therefore not as many backlinks are available yet.
To sum it all up, DigitalPoint is a very effective backlink advertising network when you are looking to acquire backlinks quickly. I would not use DigitalPoint for long term SEO, though. AdCaliber seems to be your best bet for long term SEO and seems to give you better control over your backlinks.

Anatomy Of A Reciprocal Linking Campaign
Reciprocal linking means forming partnerships with other sites who place a link from their Web pages to yours. You then give them a similar link in return.
When you look for people to swap links with, make sure that you don’t reduce the quality or content of your own site. You don’t want users to click straight through without reading your content; you want them to take action on your own site rather than have them leave empty handed.
One way to stop them from running away too quickly is to create a “Webmasters Resource Page” and link to that page from your homepage. This doesn’t take away from the content on your homepage and the links are just one click away rather than being buried deep within the site, giving value to your partners.
In any case, you want to be sure that your site is more than just a page full of links. If your site contains more links than content, it will look like a link farm and it will certainly not be attractive to webmasters, search engines or users.
Picking your partner
Your link partners should be sites your target market will visit. Think about your product and its subject area and brainstorm to determine where people interested in your product might be looking online.
For example, if you’re trying to shift your book about blackjack strategy, it makes sense that the people visiting online casinos would make great customers. Online casinos then could be good partners. Identify top-ranked, high quality casino sites and find the email address, telephone number and snail mail address of their webmasters.
You can also identify your competitors and see where they trade links. After all why reinvent the wheel when you can use your competitors hard work!
Seven Top Tips For Requesting reciprocal Links…
1. Before you contact webmasters, place a link to their site on your resource page to assure them that you will actually provide a quality link.
2. Create a subject line that will encourage them to read your message rather than deleting it – you don’t want them to think you’re spamming them. (Something about their site or product is sure to capture their attention; they will open it, thinking you’re a potential customer.) Hint – subscribe to their ezine and then reply using the ezine subject line as the subject of your reply.
3. Begin your message by talking about your visit to their site and what you found interesting about it. Detail your product or service in one line and ask them to exchange links with you.
4. Tell them in detail where you have placed their link, include the precise URL, tell them where to find their link on the page and emphasize that it is only one click away from your homepage.
5. Tell them that if you don’t hear back from them in a specific number of days, you will consider that to a negative response and that you will remove their link from your site. Give them enough time to respond but don’t leave it open ended.
6. Sending a reciprocal link request by email is becoming less and less effective due to Spam filters and the high volume of email traffic received by webmasters of busy sites. Try sending your request on a postcard or better still make a phone call.
7. Tell the webmaster how they will benefit from the reciprocal linking arrangement – explain what’s in it for them and use your selling and persuasion skills!

Many Backlinks are not Created Proportionately
Ok, we all know backlinks are a huge part of determining your site worth to most search engines. Each backlink to your site is a vote for it. Backlinks are the building blocks of SEO itself. We’ll look into what should be on your mind as you are acquiring backlinks.
The first intuition is to see how many you can get. That’s just one piece of the whole backlink pie. Search engines like Google have been around time and have a lot of brilliant minds working for them. A higher quality backlink is worth more towards higher search engine rankings.
Some things to consider about backlinks:
1. Age affects all backlinks. Google specifically weighs a backlink more with age. Backlinks gain in weight over time until after around 6 months they reach their full weight. Basically, it means that the effort you do building backlinks will be worth more and more.
2. Anchor text is hugely important. The words on the backlink itself from the other site also play into it appears the other site views your site. When the keywords you are optimizing for are used, the link gains a much higher quality. The thing to watch out for here is that the text is varying. Google picks up on when all of you backlinks have the same exact text.
3. Getting backlinks from sites with the same theme as yours will benefit you much more than non-relevant sites. This makes sense since a link to your health food site from a car site about old Mustangs isn’t going to do much for a visitor, so it won’t for Google either.
4. The better the reputation or Page Rank of a site that links to you, the higher quality it is. Fairly obvious. If CNN or Slashdot linked to you, that one backlink would likely outweigh all your other backlinks together.
5. The physical location of a backlink on the page can also be a notable factor for search engines. Google in particular lends more weight to links the higher towards the top of the page. If there is surrounding content the links appear more natural so they are valued higher.
Reciprocal links are always the hot topic when talking SEO. The truth is, reciprocal links are still alive and going well. Reciprocal links between websites with similar themes is natural and expected. Though I have read many times of claims that reciprocal linking is dead, rest assured that quality reciprocal links are not going away anytime soon. Google for instance has its sights set on backlinks that were bought, and from link farms where 5 minutes after paying some money you have thousands of sites pointing to yours.
While there are many other factors such as the age of your website and how much content is on your website, those will be left to another article.
Backlinks are indeed the cornerstone of getting a website established on the Internet. Without enough backlinks visitors won’t know your site exists, and search engines will put little weight to your website resulting in a further loss of potential traffic, which could make or break your site. The key is to go out knowing what backlinks you want and spend enough time to make your site known. Properly setup, your backlinks will keep your site popular with visitors for a long time to come.

Getting a high traffic website is directly tied into how easily accessible you are in the search engines. The most common method of getting more backlinks to your website or blog is to research other similar websites that have high page ranks and solicit them for a reciprocal link. A reciprocal link is when you agree to add another marketer’s link on your website in return they will advertise your link. This method can be time consuming and very difficult because someone with a high page rank is usually not interested in a link exchange, especially from a lesser page rank website. If you still want to pursue this method you should send the website owner an email stating your interest in a reciprocal link and patiently wait for a response.
Forums are great sources to get thousands of backlinks. Forums are indexed by the search engines on a regular basis, so when you make a post to your favorite forum, it gets picked by the search engines. Make sure that when you sign up for a forum to leave your website or you business opportunities in your forum signature. The advantages of a creating a forum signature is, when someone clicks on a forum topic that was indexed by the search engines, they will have a direct link to your website from your forum signature. The more post you make to different topics, the more backlinks you will create to your website.
Writing articles on topics relating to your website and submitting your articles to article directories will also help to get more backlinks. The key to article writing is to write to write in a way that your audience understands; it doesn’t have to be very technical. Most newbie marketers get intimidated by this method, but it is actually one of the simplest and best producing methods you can use to get thousands of backlinks. The most popular article directories are Goarticles and Ezine articles. Before you submit your article, read their instructions carefully, they do have some guidelines that are mandatory.
Web 2.0 is the new wave that is taking the internet into the next generation of Advertising. The main ingredient of the Web 2.0 concept is social networking websites. Social networking sites are quickly becoming the most popular and effective way to get thousands of backlinks to your website.
